Enhancing ESHOPMAN Admin: Clearer Product Media Upload Errors for a Smoother Experience
Managing product media is a core function for any e-commerce store, especially when leveraging the power of a headless platform like ESHOPMAN, which integrates seamlessly with HubSpot for storefront management. A smooth experience in the ESHOPMAN Admin Dashboard is crucial for merchants to efficiently manage their product catalogs and deploy stunning storefronts via HubSpot CMS.
Recently, our ESHOPMAN community identified and actively addressed a significant bug that was causing frustration during product media uploads. This issue highlighted a critical area for improvement in how the ESHOPMAN Admin handles failed media uploads, ensuring a more intuitive and robust user experience.
The Challenge: Confusing Errors in Product Media Uploads
The problem arose when an attempt to upload media for a product in the ESHOPMAN Admin Dashboard failed. Instead of providing a clear, actionable error message from the server, the system would present a generic "failedToUpload" message. Worse, the system would then proceed to attempt an update of the product details, including the failed media entry but without a valid URL. This often led to a secondary, highly confusing error message like "Invalid request: Field 'images, N, url' is required", leaving merchants unsure of the actual cause of the upload failure.
This behavior impacted the efficiency of storefront management within HubSpot, as merchants faced unnecessary hurdles in updating product visuals, directly affecting the quality of their HubSpot CMS-deployed storefronts.
Understanding the Technical Root Cause
The core of the issue lay in the handleSubmit function within the product media edit form in the ESHOPMAN Admin Dashboard. Specifically, the .catch() block designed to handle upload failures was replacing the server's detailed error message with a generic one and, critically, not aborting the subsequent product update process. Here's a simplified look at the problematic code:
const { files: uploads } = await sdk.admin.upload
.create({ files: filesToUpload.map((m) => m.file) })
.catch(() => {
form.setError("media", { type: "invalid_file", message: t("products.media.failedToUpload") })
return { files: [] }
})
// ... then media.map(...) sets url: uploaded[i]?.url (undefined) and the update is sent
As you can see, even if the sdk.admin.upload.create call failed, the code would continue, passing an empty files array. This meant that when the product update API (sdk.admin.product.update) was called, it received entries for images with undefined URLs, triggering the misleading validation error.
The Community-Driven Solution: Fail-Fast and Clear Feedback
The ESHOPMAN community quickly converged on a solution: implement a "fail-fast" pattern with improved error handling. The proposed fix involves:
- Halting Submission on Failure: If the
POST /admin/uploadscall (part of the ESHOPMAN Admin API) fails, the product update process should be immediately stopped. - Surfacing Original Server Errors: Instead of a generic message, the actual error message from the ESHOPMAN Admin API should be displayed to the user. This provides clear, actionable feedback, for example, "SVG files are not allowed" if a custom middleware rejects specific file types.
- Robust Error Handling: Replacing the simple
.catch()with atry/catchblock allows for better control, ensuring that the original error is preserved and the flow is aborted when necessary. - Regression Testing: Adding tests to verify that upload failures correctly show the server error and prevent incomplete product updates.
This collaborative effort, with multiple developers eager to contribute, underscores the strength of the ESHOPMAN community in continually refining the platform. By addressing such issues, ESHOPMAN ensures that merchants have a reliable and transparent experience when managing their headless commerce operations through HubSpot.
Impact for ESHOPMAN Users and Developers
This fix significantly enhances the ESHOPMAN Admin experience:
- For Merchants: Clearer error messages mean less confusion and quicker resolution of upload issues, streamlining product management and ensuring accurate storefront content in HubSpot CMS.
- For Developers: It highlights best practices in API interaction and frontend error handling within the ESHOPMAN ecosystem, particularly for those extending the Admin Dashboard or building custom integrations. It reinforces the importance of robust error propagation from the Node.js/TypeScript backend (Admin API) to the user interface.
The ESHOPMAN platform continues to evolve, driven by community insights and a commitment to providing a powerful, user-friendly headless commerce solution deeply integrated with HubSpot.
