Ensuring Seamless User Experience: Handling Collection Edit Errors in ESHOPMAN Admin UI

At Move My Store, we understand that a smooth and intuitive ESHOPMAN Admin UI is crucial for managing your headless commerce storefront effectively within HubSpot. Clear feedback is paramount, especially when performing critical operations like editing product collections. Recently, our ESHOPMAN community identified and addressed a significant user experience issue related to collection management.

The Challenge: Silent Failures in Collection Editing

Users interacting with the ESHOPMAN Admin UI's collection editing feature (found at the route /app/collections/:id/edit) encountered a frustrating problem. When attempting to update a collection's details – for instance, changing its unique handle to one that already exists – the system would silently fail. Instead of presenting a helpful error message or toast notification, the edit drawer would simply remain open, giving no indication that the save operation had failed. The only trace of the issue was an unhandled promise rejection visible in the browser's developer console, displaying a 400 (Bad Request) error.

Steps to Observe the Issue:

  1. Create two distinct collections, for example, with handles 'kitchen' and 'garden'.
  2. Navigate to edit one of these collections.
  3. Attempt to set its handle to the handle of the other existing collection (e.g., change 'kitchen' to 'garden').
  4. Click 'Save'.

Expected Behavior: A clear error message (e.g., a toast notification) indicating that a collection with the specified handle already exists.

Actual Behavior: No visual feedback. The edit drawer remains open, and the save appears to have done nothing, leading to confusion.

Understanding the Technical Root Cause

This silent failure stemmed from how error handling was implemented (or rather, not implemented) in specific parts of the ESHOPMAN Admin UI. The core problem lay in the components responsible for updating collection data:

  • The EditCollectionForm component, located in packages/admin/dashboard/src/routes/collections/collection-edit/components/edit-collection-form/edit-collection-form.tsx, was calling its mutateAsync function with only an onSuccess callback. Crucially, it lacked an onError callback to catch and display server-side errors. Additionally, the necessary toast utility from @eshopman/ui was not imported in this file.
  • Similarly, the useUpdateCollection hook (defined in packages/admin/dashboard/src/hooks/api/collections.tsx) did not specify a default onError handler.
  • Furthermore, the global query client configuration in packages/admin/dashboard/src/lib/query-client.ts lacked a comprehensive global fallback for mutation errors, meaning individual components had to handle errors explicitly.

This pattern meant that when the ESHOPMAN Admin API responded with an error (like a 400 for a duplicate handle), the error promise was left unhandled, resulting in no user-facing feedback.

The ESHOPMAN Solution Pattern

Fortunately, the ESHOPMAN Admin UI already incorporates robust error handling in other areas, providing a clear blueprint for the fix. Components like edit-product-form.tsx and create-promotion-form.tsx correctly implement error feedback by:

  • Importing the toast utility from @eshopman/ui.
  • Adding an onError callback to their mutateAsync calls, typically structured as:
onError: (e) => toast.error(e.message)

This established pattern ensures that any error message returned by the ESHOPMAN Admin API is promptly displayed to the user via a toast notification, guiding them to correct the issue.

Community-Driven Resolution

A proactive member of the ESHOPMAN community, GeorgeS311578, not only identified this bug but also outlined the precise fix, offering to contribute a pull request. The proposed solution involves mirroring the successful error handling pattern from other ESHOPMAN Admin UI forms: importing the toast component and implementing the onError callback within the collection editing components.

This collaborative effort highlights the strength of the ESHOPMAN community in refining the platform. By ensuring that all user interactions, especially those involving data submission, are met with clear and actionable feedback, we enhance the overall user experience for merchants and developers managing their headless commerce storefronts through ESHOPMAN and HubSpot CMS.
